The Headline Number

21

online master’s programs in psychology, counseling and social work lead to a license.

That is 28%. Add the 4 programs with a licensure track, and it is 33%. The other programs fit careers that need no license, from I-O and forensic psychology to applied behavior analysis.

Key Findings

  • 21 online master’s programs lead to a license, out of 75 we reviewed, and 4 more do on one track or in some states. 34 more are general, I-O, forensic, sport and positive psychology degrees built for careers that need no license, and 16 prepare you for certifications or add-on training.
  • Every counseling and social work master’s points at a license: 7 of 7 counseling programs are CACREP-accredited and 12 of 12 MSW programs are CSWE-accredited.
  • The 31 general, I-O and forensic psychology master’s programs are the right fit for careers that need no license, such as workplace, research and consulting roles.
  • All 10 of 10 online school psychology specialist programs are NASP-accredited or NASP-approved, the usual route to a school psychologist credential.
  • 5 of 7 online PsyD programs are APA-accredited, and all 5 state campus residencies or intensives. Touro Worldwide’s PsyD lists no campus visits and no APA accreditation.
  • Licensure master’s programs with a listed price have a median of $800 a credit, against $673 for no-license master’s programs. Counseling sits at $532.50 and MSW at $1,036.50.
  • Federal pay for the licensed careers runs from $59,350 for mental health counselors to $100,580 for clinical and counseling psychologists. I-O psychologists need no license and earn the most at $193,950, across 790 jobs.

If you want to be a licensed therapist, counselor, social worker or psychologist, the degree you pick decides most of it. Online programs look alike in the brochure. They are not alike at the licensing board.

This report sorts every online and hybrid graduate program on our ranking pages by what the program itself says it leads to. You can read each program’s ranking in our online counseling programs, online MSW programs and online PsyD programs lists.

How Many Online Programs Lead to a License, by Degree Level

Specialist degrees are the most reliable path: all 10 school psychology programs lead to a state credential. Master’s programs split roughly 1 in 4. Doctoral programs split by accreditation.

Among the 75 master’s programs, 21 lead to a license: 12 MSW programs, 7 counseling programs and 2 clinical psychology programs, from Pepperdine and Fort Hays State. Walden and Capella clinical psychology, The Chicago School forensic psychology and Northern Michigan sport psychology offer a licensure track beside other options.

The 16 certification or add-on programs are not first licenses. Six applied behavior analysis programs prepare you for BCBA certification, seven psychopharmacology programs are for psychologists who already hold a license, and three sport psychology programs prepare for CMPC certification.

How Much Do Online Licensure Programs Cost Per Credit?

Counseling is the cheapest door to a license by the credit. MSW programs cost about twice as much, and clinical doctorates cost more again. Prices are the programs’ own listed rates.

  • Career degree, no license needed

The number in parentheses is how many programs in each group list a price.

The three lowest listed rates among licensure programs are Fort Hays State’s clinical psychology master’s at $338.62, Lamar University’s counseling master’s at $400 to $475 and Florida State University’s MSW at $444 for Florida residents. The highest are the University of Southern California’s MSW at $2,256 and Pepperdine’s clinical master’s at $2,030.

A cheap credit is not a cheap degree. MSW programs list 58 to 81 credits on the standard track and 30 to 54 with advanced standing, so compare the total on each program’s own page before you rank by price.

Which Online Licensure Programs Need You on Campus?

Just 2 of the 21 licensure master’s programs state a campus residency: Adler University’s counseling program and Fort Hays State’s clinical psychology program. The rest run on your screen, with a practicum or field placement near home.

Doctoral programs are different. All 6 APA-accredited clinical doctorates state residencies, intensives or regional clusters, and so do 6 of the 10 school psychology programs.

MSW programs that list their field hours show the scale: Baylor lists 550 to 1,030 hours, Boise State and Central Florida 600, Buffalo 480 and Florida State about 512. Those hours happen in person at an agency.

What Do the Licensed Careers Pay?

These are national median annual wages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025. The occupations are the ones the licensure programs above lead to, plus I-O psychology for contrast.

  • License required
  • No license needed

The license does not set the pay by itself. Counselors and social workers earn $59,350 to $67,880 at the median, school psychologists earn $95,990 and clinical and counseling psychologists earn $100,580. The doctoral path costs the most per credit and pays the most among the licensed careers.

I-O psychologists earn $193,950 with no license, the highest median here. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 790 of them nationwide, so it is a small, high-paying market, and the 11 online I-O master’s programs are built to prepare you for it. Full pay breakdowns live on our counselor, clinical social worker, school psychologist and clinical psychologist salary pages.

What This Means If You Want to Be Licensed

Start with the license, then pick the degree. If you want to do therapy, look at counselor, clinical social worker or clinical psychologist careers first. If your goal is workplace, research, consulting or coaching work, a general, I-O or forensic psychology master’s is the right fit, and I-O pays the most of any career here with no license required.

Check accreditation before you check tuition. Counseling programs show CACREP, MSW programs show CSWE, school psychology programs show NASP and doctoral clinical programs show APA. The Chicago School lists APA candidacy status and Touro Worldwide lists no APA accreditation for their PsyD programs, so check your state’s rule before you enroll.

Plan for in-person hours. Every licensure path ends in supervised practice, and some programs also want you on campus for a week or a weekend. Our online clinical psychology and online school psychology rankings list the format for each school.

Call your state board before you enroll. Boards set the final rule for hours, exams and which degrees count, and they differ. Our guide on how to become a psychologist walks through the steps.

Methodology: How We Counted Licensure Programs

Source and date. We read the 217 program listings across 26 PsychPrograms ranking pages on October 6, 2026. Each listing carries the program’s accreditation, tuition, length and format as we recorded them from the school.

What we kept. We set aside 24 bachelor’s and 54 certificate listings, 13 on-campus-only graduate listings (10 dual MSW and JD programs, 2 geropsychology doctorates and a Claremont PhD), and 24 repeat listings of a degree already counted. That leaves 102 programs at 76 institutions: 75 master’s, 10 specialist and 17 doctoral.

What counts as a license. A program leads to a license when its listing names a licensure accreditor (CSWE for MSW, CACREP for counseling, NASP for school psychology, APA for doctoral clinical) or states a licensure track.

Programs with one licensure track beside other options, or a license that depends on state rules, are marked License on Some Tracks. BCBA, CMPC and add-on programs are marked Certification or Add-On. Everything else is marked Career Degree, No License Needed.

Price. We took each program’s listed per-credit rate and used the midpoint when a range is listed. We left out quarter-credit rates, military-only rates and add-on fees, so 66 of 102 programs have a price. Medians are medians of those midpoints.

Campus residency. A program is marked Stated when its listed format names a residency, intensive, institute, cluster or required campus visit. Optional campus events and programs that state no campus visits are not marked.

Pay. National median, 10th and 90th percentile wages and employment come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 release.

Limits. Classification comes from the program listings, not from state board rulings. Boards decide which degrees qualify, so confirm yours before you enroll. Read the wider PsychPrograms methodology for how we gather program data.
