That spread is wide because the title covers a lot of ground. A newly certified counselor at a nonprofit outpatient clinic earns very differently from a master's-level counselor running medication-assisted treatment inside a hospital. Your state, your credential, and your setting are the three levers that decide where you land.

The mean of $64,440 sitting above the median of $59,350 tells you the field is right-skewed. A smaller group of master's-level and supervisory counselors pulls the average up. Half of all addiction counselor salary figures land between $47,100 and $76,530, the 25th and 75th percentiles.

Addiction counselors raise their pay by climbing the credential ladder and moving toward the higher-paying corners of the field. The single biggest jump comes from finishing a master's degree, which the BLS ties to about $12,000 more a year than a bachelor's alone.

From there, specialization and setting do the rest. Counselors who add medication-assisted treatment or co-occurring-disorders skills, or who step into supervision, pull well above the $59,350 median. The O*NET profile for this occupation shows the same pattern across settings.

Timing works in your favor. The BLS projects 17% job growth for these counselors from 2024 to 2034, with about 48,300 openings a year. Steady demand gives you real leverage when you negotiate a raise or relocate for a higher-paying state or setting.
