Clinical Psychopharmacology & Prescribing Psychology in Colorado

Key Takeaways

  • Colorado is one of only six states that grant psychologists prescriptive authority (RxP). Governor Polis signed HB23-1071 on March 3, 2023, and the implementing rules took effect November 30, 2023.
  • To prescribe, a licensed Colorado psychologist must earn a prescription certificate from the State Board of Psychologist Examiners after completing an APA-designated MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology, the PEP exam, supervised experience, and independent peer review.
  • Colorado requires 750 hours of supervised experience completed in 12 to 24 months, including 250 hours focused on patients under 18 or over 65 where applicable.
  • The University of Colorado Denver runs the state's in-state, APA-designated MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology, with an optional Prescribing Fellowship Certificate that builds in the supervised step.
  • Clinical and counseling psychologists in Colorado earn a median of $113,290 (BLS, May 2025), and prescribing psychologists generally earn above that because medication management is billable.
